At Punta del Capo, just outside Sorrento, the sea comes in through a natural arch and forms a closed pool — green, still. Around it are the remains of the Roman villa of Pollio Felice, first century: you swim inside an archaeological site.
The name comes from Joanna of Anjou, Queen of Naples, who by tradition bathed here. True or not, the place has earned it.
You can only get there on foot, on a walk through olive trees that is already half the reason to go. Wear closed shoes: the last stretch is rock.
We were there in July 2019, and it’s the place we took more photos of than any other — twenty-seven of them. That says something.
