This isn’t a tour. It’s a time of day.
People staying in Naples or on the coast reach the ruins mid-morning, along with the coaches. From here you walk there in fifteen minutes, and you’re at the gate when it opens: the first hours are the only time Pompeii can be seen the way it should be — in silence, with no queue.
And earlier still, at actual dawn, it’s worth going out anyway: the six o’clock light on the site, with Vesuvius behind it, is a different thing from the light at noon. The photos below were taken at 6:19 in the morning, in early June.
A note: the excavations have their own opening hours, and at dawn the gate is shut — the advantage is arriving first when it opens, not getting in at six. Always check hours and tickets on the official site before you leave the house.
